Victor J. Cegarra
Born in Caracas, Venezuela on February 23rd of 1959. At the age of 7, started learning to play the "cuatro" (a Venezuelan guitar with only 4 strings). Later on, he learned guitar basics for a very brief time and moved on to his first piano lessons at the age of 9 from a neighbor piano teacher he studied piano for about a year when he enrolled at the National Conservatory Juan Manuel Olivares where he studied music theory, sight singing, and ear training at age 10. By the way, when the turned 11, he was retused piano instruction for being "too old to start piano studies". At age 13 he went yet to Lino Gallardo National Conservatory of Music to study complementary piano, which he old for about 3 years.
Took a break from music studies until it was tima to start college when attending a band rehearsal from a musician friend of his, decided that it was time to get involved once again with music. In addition at about the same time listening to Chick Corea's tune Armando's Rumba, inspired him to get back to the piano and learn about Jazz at about 19 years of age while going to college as a Busines Mayor. His first Jazz Piano instructors were Olegario Diaz and Marcus Vinicio da Fonceca who introduced jazz and Brazilian music. Other Latin styles were self-taught as he was an avid listener for salsa, cumbia, merenge and other popular ethnic styles.
Through the next years he would be involved with other starting musicians and perform a variety of styles ranging from American Pop, Latin, and Jazz related styles to appear in parties, shows, and other local venues starting to become a professional musician considering that he still attended college full time and held a 40-hour a week job as a loan analyst. Here is a list of musicians/artists he had the chance to perform with: Jorge Barnett, Jesus Franco, Pedro Longueira, Miguel Blanco, Carlos Noriega, Rodolfo Parra, Eduardo Cornejo, Manuel Paredes “ El Frances”, Ruben Rebolledo, Arelis, los hermanos Alcuati (Wontuno), Jorge Llanos, Gonzalo Mico, and many others. His involvement in music at age 22 made it increasingly difficult to do well in college. His first paying jobs in music became a distraction to successfully complete college courses at which time he decides to move to the United States in an effort to finish his business degree. In May of 1982, soon after turning 23 he moves to Austin, Texas where he learns English and continues Business School. In 1985 he receives a Bachelor’s Degree in Business from Saint Edward’s University. While attending Saint Edward’s he goes back to playing music as a way of paying his way through college. In Austin he had the opportunity to perform locally and throughout the State of Texas with Tom Huzak, Corrine Cruz, Orchestra Shati, Latin Tempo and a few other local groups and artists.
In 1986, he moves to Los Angeles where after a few months he resumes performing with a few Latin Bands and artists as a sideman. After playing with smaller lesser-known bands, he decides to go back to school to pursue studies in music. In 1991 he earns an Associate’s Degree in Arts with concentration in Piano Music Performance and in 1993 he earns a Bachelor’s Degree of Music Performance with a concentration in Jazz Studies from The California State University at Los Angeles. At Cal. State L.A. he has the opportunity to perform and record with the school’s best small and large ensembles, including some of the faculty ensembles. Since he started performing and recording for many local artists like Orquesta Opa-Opa, Los Grecos, Banda Azucar, Johnny Martinez, Cecilia Noel, Los Iracundos de Hoy, Robert Incelli, Banda Costa Azul, Bobby Matos, Rudy Regalado, Luis Conte, Justo Almario (Tolu), Dave Pike, and a few other local bands. After performing, recording, and some light touring, he shares his interest in music with education. First, as a piano instructor for the City of Torrance Department of Parks and Recreation where he stayed for about a bit more than a year teaching beginning piano for both children and adults. Later, as a regular elementary school teacher for the Los Angeles Unified School District where he has been teaching since July 1998. In June 2001 he obtained a Bilingual Multiple Subject Teaching Credential and in June of 2005 a Master’s Degree/Credential in Education Administration from The California State University at Dominguez Hills in Carson, California.
